The Sandarach is a dangerous predator fairly common to the Ridhium desertscapes. They are the larval form of Sandwings.
They hunt their prey by building a massive conical pit in the sand (300 to 600 feet wide and approximately 80 to 160 feet deep) and waiting in the center for the unsuspecting traveller to fall in. They are slow to move, but their reflexes and long-reaching claws more than account for speed. They can also release a low, powerful vibration through the sand that makes the particles even slipperier, but this is a last resort, as it usually destroys the sand trap in the process.
Their ideal hunting grounds are calm, undisturbed plains of sand sheltered from the wind so that the trap is not filled in by migrating sand. They also tend to remain within a ten mile radius of their nest.
Sandarach nests are difficult to find, often tucked inside narrow canyons or between plateaus only accessible via tunnels or air. As Sandarachs, they are largely lone hunters, but when they reach a certain size and age, they return to the nest to enter a cocoon and metamorphose into Sandwings.
Creator's Notes: Sandarachs are inspired by the real-world antlion insect, which builds a tiny pit in the sand to trap ants and spiders. I thought to myself: I have sand, and it's pretty much cannon to have insect enemies in Zelda, so let's blow this thing up fifty times larger! These nasty critters will play a role in Sacred Hand fairly early on in Link's adventures, so keep an eye out! The design is still tentative, but I like where it's going.
Edit: I added a little Link there as a size reference.
Good grief, if the sandarach is that big, then how large is the sandwing? Anyhow, awesome concept; I love the fact that you based it off the antlion, and actually an enemy similar to this has appeared in Zelda games before: [link]. Your creature, however, is a bit more terrifying, due to it's immense size.
Aaah! Of course! How could I have forgotten those! (so flipping annoying in FSA). It's probably the same creature, just adapted differently, and hence given a new name.
As for size, consider this: the sandarach survives by digging huge pits, whereas a flying creature must be more agile and lightweight. A butterfly is not necessarily bigger than a caterpillar. ;]
